Wednesday 27

The Lighting Operator workshop is intended to give the participant a good overview of what happens during the run of a show when you sign on as an operator. We review the overall process, what happens during a typical show, and what to do when things don’t go quite as planned. It is well suited to anyone that wants to get into working in The Booth during a show, is interested in lighting, or is simply curious as to what those people are doing in there during a show.

Presented by our own Edward Gueulette, who recently won the Best Lighting Design for the second year in a row at Theatre BC's Provincial Mainstage for his work on The Half Life of Marie Curie. He has lit many shows over his 40 plus years with Nanaimo Theatre Group.

The February meeting of the Play Reading Committee. Jim Mahar will be presenting The Book of Will by Lauren Gunderson. The play website can be found here.

Some notes about the show:

Without William Shakespeare, we wouldn’t have literary masterpieces like Romeo and Juliet. But without Henry Condell and John Heminges, we would have lost half of Shakespeare’s plays forever! After the death of their friend and mentor, the two actors are determined to compile the First Folio and preserve the words that shaped their lives. They’ll just have to borrow, beg, and band together to get it done. Amidst the noise and color of Elizabethan London, The Book of Will finds an unforgettable true story of love, loss, and laughter, and sheds new light on a man you may think you know

Sunday 18 to Saturday March 9

NTG Members: We are thrilled to announce another improv night hosted by Studio 58 actor Jim Maher. Improv games are acting exercises with no script. Instead of reciting lines, react to the situation and improvise dialogue and action. This is a no pressure, come on out and let your silly fly night! No experience is necessary to participate. More improv nights will happen based on interest.
Start Time: 7:00pm

RSVP: None required. You must be an NTG member to attend. Not a member? Click here!

Monday 18

The March meeting of the Play Reading Committee. Michael Armstrong will be presenting Perfect Arrangement.

Some notes about the show:

It’s 1950, and new colors are being added to the Red Scare. Two U.S. State Department employees, Bob and Norma, have been tasked with identifying sexual deviants within their ranks. There’s just one problem: Both Bob and Norma are gay, and have married each other’s partners as a carefully constructed cover. Inspired by the true story of the earliest stirrings of the American gay rights movement, madcap classic sitcom-style laughs give way to provocative drama as two “All-American” couples are forced to stare down the closet door.

From Auditions to Show – A Stage Managers Guide

This workshop will focus on all required duties of a stage manager in a community theatre setting. We will be focusing on four main objectives – a general overview of the rehearsal process, creating a prompt book, moving from rehearsals to tech and how to call a show. We will end the night with amble time for a discussion period to help answer any questions you may have. Whether you are new to stage management or a regular around the club, all are encouraged to come out and join in on what it takes to be a stage manager.

This workshop will be hosted by Tasha Ballantyne, a long-time stage manager at NTG. Club favorites such as Cabaret, Bus Stop and Diary of Ann Frank are a few examples of her work. Tasha is a well-respected and well-versed SM in shows as small as four to large cast musicals. Tasha has experience traveling with productions to Zone and Mainstage festivals, most recently leading the team that won the Backstage Cooperation Award at Mainstage in 2019.
