THE STORY: A sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

Director

Rob Atkinson

NTG is proud to support Rob Atkinson in his directorial debut with Ripcord. Rob has acted in many NTG productions and most recently in The Play That Goes Wrong at ECHO Players in Qualicum.

In a recent interview, Rob commented: Life doesn’t always turn out the way we expect. So what happens when we find ourselves thrust into a situation we can’t control with people we don’t really know. That’s what faces our two main characters in “Ripcord”. Consider it a cross between the Golden Girls and The Odd Couple. David Lindsay-Abaire has written a delightful tale about two mature women who find themselves thrust together in a single room trying to establish who gets what. We get to see how they view each other and the life they have now have to share with each other. When I first read this play I couldn’t stop laughing and then I found all the beautiful little moments where we get to see how these ladies ended up where they are and what they are prepared to do to make it the best situation possible. They are very real people with different ways of dealing with life but sharing a background of struggles that have made them who they are. Will it bring them together, or tear them apart? I am very excited to be presenting this play in my directorial debut and have been truly blessed with an incredible cast and extremely supportive crew. After 16 years and over 30 productions on stage, it has been completely fulfilling to sit on the other side of the table and watch talented people do what they do best - entertain. Thank you to NTG and the cast of “Ripcord” for trusting me with this delightful tale.
